BIOGRAPHY

Armando Mendez, Ph.D., is a Research Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and a Principal Investigator at the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He received his doctoral degree in Biochemistry from the University of Miami and did his post-doctoral training at the University of Washington in the Endocrine Division, Department of Medicine. Dr. Mendez’ first academic appointment was at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He joined the faculty of the University of Miami in 1997.

Research interestS

Dr. Mendez’s research interests have primarily focused on understanding pathways and mechanisms related to the development of atherosclerosis that occur as a consequence of diabetes, obesity and other metabolic abnormalities. Current area of study include abnormalities in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism in persons with type 1 diabetic and the role of stress and inflammation leading to accelerated atherosclerosis and metabolic dysfunction. In addition, Dr. Mendez has been involved in clinical research studies to identify biomarkers of disease prediction and risk related to metabolic disorders and coronary heart disease.

He has authored numerous scientific papers in both Lipid Metabolism and Diabetes, and has been a reviewer for journals in these areas for many years.
