BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Sosenko is a native of Philadelphia. After attending the Temple University School of Medicine, he completed a residency in internal medicine at the UCLA Hospital. He then performed a fellowship in adolescent medicine at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston. During his training, Dr. Sosenko’s particular clinical and research interests were in diabetes. Following his fellowship, he joined the faculty of the Harvard Medical School. While in Boston, Dr. Sosenko received a Masters Degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Sosenko has been on the faculty of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since 1982. Dr. Sosenko’s main clinical interest has been adolescents and young adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. He sees those patients at the Diabetes Research Institute.

One of Dr. Sosenko’s main research interests has been risk factors of the complications of diabetes. He has published papers that include such topics as lipids in diabetes, capillary basement membrane thickness, microalbuminuria, and diabetic foot ulcers. He has published a number of papers from his studies of diabetic neuropathy, including the first that identified height as a risk factor for that condition. His most recent interest has been the study of the metabolic natural history prior to the onset of type 1 diabetes, and the prediction of that disorder. He has published a number of papers in that area. Dr. Sosenko is the Associate Chair for Epidemiology and Ethics for the Chairman’s Office of TrialNet. TrialNet is a consortium of academic researchers funded by NIDDK who perform clinical trials to develop treatments that can delay the occurrence of type 1 diabetes.

Dr. Sosenko has long been interested in issues that involve the protection of human research subjects. He was the Chair of the medical Institutional Review Board of the University of Miami for nine years and he is currently the Assistant Provost for Research Standards at the University of Miami.

Dr. Sosenko is a professor of medicine, pediatrics and epidemiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
